SECTION 1) The Utility of Displaying Multiple Versions of the Same Photograph with Hyperlinks
If you are not familiar with the ethical issues that can arise from post‑processing examine the articles and videos at the end of this section, which can be accessed by clicking on the following link: Ethics of Post-Processing Post-processed, digitally altered, and edited have the same meaning in this article. The words document and documentation in this article refer to one or more pages containing text and/or photographs that are prepared as evidence or proof. This can involve proof or evidence that supports the results of a scientific study, of an investigation, or experimentation. It can also involve proof or evidence that relates to a legal matter, original authorship, of an academic effort, and/or skills of an author. Other examples include proof or evidence of an occurrence, of a phenomenon, of a theory, or an invention. Documenting on the web, by creating webpages with appropriate evidence or proof, is especially useful for the situations that are underlined in bold type above.
Problems, Benefits, and Ethics of Post-Processing
When photographs are used to record scientific or engineering data, or for documentation, to report the news, or to convey information, post-processing can be problematic. That is photographs contain information, which can be intentionally or inadvertently distorted or concealed with post-processing. When photographs are edited their value as proof or evidence can be diminished in some cases. Post-processed photographs might be falsely perceived as deceptive by some viewers. However, post-processing is usually necessary. It can amplify or clarify the data in a photograph, and it can eliminate distractions, distortions and noise. Sometimes exaggerating contrast, brightness, and/or one or more colors in a photograph can reveal structures that were not visible in the original image.
A Relative Perspective on the Ethics of Post-Processing When post-processing involves modifying brightness, contrast, clarity, and cropping, in most cases it is not ethically problematic. Whether a particular type of post-processing or deliberate photographic distortion is ethical depends on the situation. For example, if a model is photographed for an ad to sell used cars, making her look thinner, younger, and more attractive with post-processing is not deceptive or unethical, (in my opinion). However, the post-processing would be unethical if it was used to make a used car, with a damaged chassis, look like a new automobile. This is obviously because the ad is to sell used cars and not to sell the model. On the other hand, if the ad was created to sell the services of the model, the photographs would be unethical, unless they were accompanied by another set of photographs of the model that was not digitally altered.
A Strategy to Avoid All of the Problems of Post-Processing Mentioned Above The solution to the problem presented above, is simply to present one version of the photograph that is edited, and another version that was not post-processed. In some cases, this can involve two or more versions of the same photograph that were post-processed in different ways, accompanied by one unedited version. The solution presented above can be problematic when photographs are presented on a webpage. Specifically, some of the viewers may be uninterested in looking at multiple versions of the same photograph. This difficulty can be avoided, by presenting the most important photograph directly on the webpage, and the less important versions of the photograph can be displayed when the user clicks on hyperlinks. The photographs on this website are presented with the technique described above. Specifically, in section 3 the most important photograph is displayed on the webpage. If you click on any of the photographs in section 3 an unedited version of the photograph will be displayed*. Section 4 is similar to the above, except it has an additional hyperlink under each photograph to display a high-resolution version of the photograph. *Note, each of the unedited photographs was over 22 MB, and they had to be reduced in size to function adequately on the web. This is a form of post-processing, but it does NOT affect the image viewed on a webpage, unless the reduction in size is extreme. (Based on the way the terminology is used in this sentence, REDUCTION IN SIZE refers to a reduction in the megabytes of the image, and NOT a reduction in the physical dimensions of the image.)
The links that were used for the photographs in this article are conventional hyperlinks, typically used on HTML webpages, and in PDF documents. These links can be created with conventional HTML code, and/or by clicking on specific buttons in HTML editors, or in word processor software. SECTION 2) Photographs on this Website
The photographs on this website consist of fall foliage, taken on December 1, 2017, in the zoo area of Central Park. The zoo area is relatively large, and it is gated off from the rest of the park. Most of the plants that were photographed look like they were growing wild. However, these plants were most likely selectively introduced into the area by human intervention, and probably were periodically cared for by park personnel.
Post-Processing of the Photographs on this Website Most of the photographs were initially post-processed with the photo-editing software that is bundled with Microsoft Windows 8.1. In addition, all of the photographs were pasted into a Word document, and post-processed with the photo editing functions available in Microsoft Word. The Word document was converted to the HTML format to create this website. The unedited photographs ranged in size from approximately 22 to 33 MB. This is excessively large for the web, and it was necessary to reduce their size by approximately 60%. This was done with the photo-editing software that is bundled with Microsoft Windows 8.1. However, these photographs are still extremely large for the web, and when you attempt to access them it may require up to 60 seconds before the image is displayed in your web browser.
Typical Fall Foliage, Versus the Fall Foliage in Central Park Typical fall foliage usually consists of WITHERING: leaves, weeds, and other plants, which produce various shades of yellow, orange and red. This can be seen by clicking on the above Google link. However, the foliage that I photographed in Central Park on 1 December 2017 did NOT appear to be typical. Some of the foliage did looked conventional for the fall, with yellow, orange, and red leaves, mixed in with some dead shrubbery and grass. However, a significant portion of the foliage was green, and two plant species were flowering. These plants were thriving in the chilly fall weather. All of the above can be seen in the 15 photographs, which are presented below the following instructions. |

If you click on any photograph on this website, the original unedited photograph will appear in your web browser. The unedited photographs are very large, and it might require up to 60 seconds before an image is fully displayed. When these photographs are LOADING, they might INITIALLY be blurred and/or excessively large. If the image in the web browser appears to be fully loaded, and it is blurred, click on it one or more times with the mouse. This will eliminate the blurriness. This extra step is often necessary with Internet Explorer. In section 4, there are links UNDER each photograph. If you click on this link and edited high-resolution version of the photograph will be displayed in your web browser, in less than seven seconds. This section contains a set of 49 photographs of fall foliage taken in the zoo region of central Park, on December 1, 2017.
