The photomicrographs in this section are presented as raw unedited photographic data.  They have NOT been post-processed (digitally enhanced), which will be apparent from their appearance in some cases.  These photomicrographs will NOT have the same level of sharpness and contrast as the digitally enhanced photographs on page 1.  The unedited photographic material is presented here because digitally enhanced photographic data can sometimes inadvertently be deceptive, or distort scientific results.

      In general, when any type of photographic data is digitally enhanced, some data might be lost and/or distorted.  However, some data might be revealed in a digitally enhanced photograph that was NOT apparent in the unprocessed image.  The ideals solution to the problem is to present two sets of photographs, one that was enhanced and the other that was not modified in any way.
